Classic Pieces: The Forever Bag

Blog 10/05/2013 4:15 PM

Of all the classic pieces I have covered in this series so far, The Forever Bag is probably the hardest to find. There are so many factors to take into consideration when you’re searching for your perfect forever bag: colour, material, size and shape to name but a few. Recently, my forever bag fell to pieces. Literally. I depended on that bag for work, for shopping, for evening meals and after work drinks, my forever bag matched everything effortlessly and was the perfect finishing touch to all outfits. Needless to say I was quite devastated when it finally gave up on me, though I understood it had served me well, transcending seasonal trends with ease and elegance.

My personal style is classic and understated, I don’t wear clothes and accessories which draw attention to themselves, I prefer modest and hardworking wardrobe staples. We’ve had new season bags landing almost daily at the Jules B office making my search for my new forever bag pretty easy. Trialling everything from Marc by Marc Jacobs bags (I have my eye on the Goodbye Columbus tote) to the eternal King of accessories Alexander Wang (The Rocco bag will always be my number one lust), accessory designers have pulled out all the stops to create durable, classic, elegant bags for SS13.

Investing in a forever bag is not a task to be taken lightly. The trick is to not be swayed by new season trends. Micro trends like neon and studs will not be around forever and while I love being on-trend seasonally, the key thing to remember when buying a forever bag is that you’re looking for longevity, quality and versatility. I like to work things out on a cost-per-wear basis (this applies to everything else in my wardrobe, not just bags) so let’s take another of my new-season favourites as an example. The Paul Smith zip-top shopper bag costs £580, there are 365 days in the year and if you can guarantee you’ll use it every day the cost-per-wear will come in at a tiny £1.58 a day. A forever bag should be of such a quality that it lasts for years, not just a season, again lowering the cost-per-wear. And if you do as I do and double up your day-bag for evening-wear too the cost halves to 80p! The effortless translation from daytime to evening is what makes a normal bag a forever bag. So read on for my pick of the new season bags from Jules B, I know which one I’ll be investing in…

Rocco Bag by Alexander Wang
