The Beatles: 50 Years in America

This December sees the 50th anniversary of the Beatles first release in America, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, in 1963. To celebrate the anniversary of Beatlemania some of Britain’s favourite fashion houses such as Alexander McQueen, McQ, Burberry and Paul Smith will pay tribute to the band. The celebration of British style will see interviews with Burberry’s chief creative officer Christopher Bailey and designer Sir Paul Smith named Talk is Chic discussing the band’s influence on the fashion world.

The band, consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Star, had a huge impact on popular culture and fashion throughout their career. The most recognisable during the early sixties, popularising black and grey collarless edwardian suits, a trend that was then adopted by the mod youth culture. Following this being popular among new bands of the era. Not forgetting the Beatle boot originating in the early sixties when the band wore Chelsea boots with the addition of a Cuban heel with their suits.

The late sixties saw the popularisation of bright colours, florals and paisley suits followed by Indian influenced fashions such as collarless shirts and sandals, evolving into a more casual style including t-shirts, jeans and denim jackets. John Lennon popularising the minimalistic design of the all white suit.
